On Thursday 23 November 2017, the 35th Annual General Meeting of the Women's Housing Company was held in Surry Hills.
Over 100 tenants, stakeholders, Board members and staff heard the Hon. Susan Ryan AO's Speech, "A Roof Over Their Heads: Housing For Older Women". During the address, Susan highlighted that "Access to affordable housing, for purchase or as a secure rental, should be the top priority for federal and state governments, who need to agree on the guiding human rights principle that all Australians must have access regardless of age.
With almost 60,000 applicants on the NSW Housing Register, older, single women remain amongst the most marginalised in terms of access to safe, suitable, and affordable housing. The effects of an ageing population, relationship breakdown and gender inequality are often compounded by the fact that women retire with 47% less superannuation. There is a desperate need for more targeted social and affordable housing designed to allow women to be independent and age in place.
Following the formalities and a delicious meal, guests were treated to speeches by Tenant Advisory Group (TAG) members - first in English by Bee Teh, and then by Hartaty Salim in Mandarin and Hiyam Farhat in Arabic.
All three spoke passionately about their experiences of being housed by the Women's Housing Company and participating in the TAG. As Bee said, "Every story you can share can reinforce WHC's pitch for funds for more housing.....every suggestion you make can be for feedback to look into....every effort you participate in TAG activities is a positive interaction for your well being, we need not feel alone....we have over 700 tenant friends.
The afternoon ended with 12 lucky winners receiving gift vouchers and hampers.
